The IQ Controversy
Prerequisites: some background in elementary statistics (e.g., psych 500) desirable but consent of instructor sufficient.
Grade: class participation and term papers.
Dual level. This course has been approved as an elective for psychology majors.
Description:
Basic methods and results of psychometrics aimed at quantifying intelligence
are reviewed in a historical setting. Test construction, quantitative theories
of intelligence, nature/nurture problems (twin studies); social relevance
(immigration laws, education) are some of the topics covered.

China and the West:
Explorations in cross-cultural psychology.
Prerequisites: an open mind.
Grade: class participation and term papers.
Dual level. This course has been approved as an elective for psychology majors.
Description:
A review of cross-cultural studies, mostly by modern Chinese authors, that
bear on cultural differences in cognition and human social interaction.
Topics include perception, cognition, personality, social psychology, and
psycholinguistics. Some historical and cultural background will be provided.
